I first learned about Reverend Bill when I started working for WeddingWire in 2012. The concept of a ‘Progressive Catholic’ stuck out to me as I was raised Catholic, but have since distanced myself from the church. Fast forward to 2017 when my husband, Rahul, and I got engaged. My Brazilian family was initially surprised and disappointed that I wasn’t getting married in the Catholic Church, even though only a couple of them are still practicing themselves. I reached out to Bill and he treated my husband, mom, and I to tea a few days later. By the end of our conversation, my mom had so much respect for Bill’s stance on religion – she cried!
We booked Bill for immediately after – he was the first and last officiant we met – and received the sweetest gift from him in the mail – ‘Why I Love You: A Journal of Us’. The process was straightforward and simple. Bill put together an initial draft based on a questionnaire I filled out, but flagged that it was very Catholic – which is what I had asked for – but he felt that it didn’t reflect what Rahul and I believed as a couple. He was right. A couple of drafts later and the script was perfect. The final step was to chat with Bill on the phone so he could learn more about how Rahul and I met and what we valued in each other to inform Bill’s personal reflection, which we would only hear the day of our wedding.
Our wedding ceremony exceeded expectations in every way. Bill brought all of my bridesmaids, my mom, my family, several of our guests, Rahul, and I to tears with his personal reflection. It was the most beautiful ceremony I have ever attended and I heard the same from several others, many who had recently gotten married themselves. I told Bill early on in the process, that I wanted guests to hear the reflection and say to themselves “that’s so true!” and he nailed it. Thank you, Bill, for everything! It was such an honor to have you officiate the best day of our lives!
